Located off the beaten path in Green Valley, The Buzz Cafe and Bakery is an unassuming kind of place that deserves to be discovered and would be wildly successful in a large populated town, yet I prefer that it stays tucked away where there is less of a chance that someone will steal my favorite table.
Situated between a convenience store and a barber shop, with miles of pasture to the north and south, the front door is lovingly propped open with a cow bell to allow the bakery smells to drift and torment the fitness center members downwind.
The dining area is whimsically decorated with a variety of shabby chic furnishings and humorous wall décor, including signage with consequences for complaining too loudly or leaving children unattended. (Hope you’re ready for a free kitten!) Seating is pick-your-own, and I am always excited when my favorite hand-painted 4 top is available.
The staff is attentive, service is quick, food is fresh and hot (or cold, as appropriate), and the place setting is clean. Personality abounds, and I particularly appreciated the cook’s Clifford the Big Red Dog apron.
One of my favorite features of The Buzz is the creative menu titles that turn a salad and sandwich into a bite of culture. This particular week’s lunch fare included tributes to famous women from Marie Curie soup to Lady Gaga sammies. A Trap Queen brownie was among the bakery selections from a previous era; however, once they are gone, they are gone.
I have eaten at The Buzz plenty of times, and there is always something new and exciting to try. They can tweak a ham sandwich a dozen different ways, and there seems to be no shortage of bacon. Although I am usually in the mood for lunch, the breakfast offerings are hearty enough to see me through the day, or at least until it’s time for dessert.
The bakery is replete with rich varieties of cookies and brownies. I brought home a chocolate-dipped coconut macaroon that was as big as half a softball. It will take me a few trips around the diamond to burn that sucker off. I also took some cake pops home to the kids…it was my lucky day…cake is not a typical a la carte item. My only fleeting disappointment was that I couldn’t buy a single cake slice for a friend on her birthday. However, I special ordered the Chocolate Mocha Tuxedo cake for a family gathering over the holidays which just about did everyone in. It was amazingly rich and decadent. I probably could have passed out deli-thin slices of it and everyone would have been more than satisfied.
With so much temptation on the menu, I often overlook the beverage assortment and stick with water or hot tea. But there is a full lineup of gourmet coffee drinks I will have to start inspecting when I am not so intent on eating. Check back for the report!
